The Farm

298517_445490165501011_1211411172_n

Five Bob, in Birchs Bay Tasmania, is a mixed farm, producing a range of horticultural products including cut flowers (Dutch Iris), forage and essential oil crops, native pepper and a range of other native plant food species. We’ve recently established a vineyard and are looking forward to enjoying the fruits of that labour in the not-too-distant future.

There are very few commercial farms in the southern Channel region these days – very different from when our family arrived here, when almost everyone made their living from berry fruits, apples, pigs, a few chooks and a dairy cow.

To sustain a commercial operation we have had to take advantage of our natural assets – perfect climate, wide range of soil types, a multi-skilled workforce, proximity to Hobart and internet connections to the rest of the world. We currently employ 10 – 12 local people, mostly locals, but almost all of our income comes from outside Tasmania, – more than half of that from export.

We’re also more public than most farms – we encourage visitors to enjoy walks in our bush, visit the café and kitchen garden and to explore our annual sculpture trail- the Art Farm Birchs Bay Sculpture Prize.

Guided tours of Diemen Pepper or other aspects of the farm can be arranged – contact Chris (0407 781 600) or ask at the Café.
